As a dog walker in Branford, CT I'm tasked with getting my client's pooches out for some exercise in the middle of the day. But often, the appointments are scheduled at some of the hottest times: noon, 2pm, 3pm. Dogs can overheat quickly; not to mention burn their paws on hot asphalt. When it is just to hot to take your dog for a good long walk in the summer heat, why not take him for a swim?!
Here are some top places in CT to take your pooch for a summer swim (or shady hike):
1. Stony Creek Quarry Preserve, Branford, CT
Distance from Branford, CT: 0 min.
Just off Route 146 at the end of Quarry Rd, is the old Stony Creek Quarry. Mainly used for hiking, you can still view a working quarry from some of the trails. From the parking lot side of the road, follow the white dot or green rectangle trail. These trails are not for beginners and some trails are not marked well. However, if you are looking for a clean place for your dog to swim, you only have to walk in a short way.
2. Farm River State Park, East Haven, CT
Distance from Branford, CT: 5 min.
The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection and Quinnipiac University manage this gorgeous 62-acre Connecticut state park. The trails are accessible from both Short Beach Rd. and Mansfield Grove Rd. Well maintained trails lead to the waterfront or “marina” portion of the Park. Dogs should be on leash.
3. Cascades at Lake Mohigan, Fairfield, CT
Distance from Branford, CT: 35 min.
Distance from Branford, CT: 1 hr. 10 min.
Part of Paugnut State Forest, this park includes five trails and a pond to play and cool off in. There is a posted leash requirement that does not seem to be strictly enforced, so we'll leave you to make the call.
